Team 178
From 2021 through 2025, I worked with FRC Team 178, The 2nd Law Enforcers, as Head of Digital Media and Public Relations. The job was a mix of design, production, and the unglamorous work of getting material ready for an actual team to use.
I made team shirts, flags, banners, and logos, and helped produce video and audio for the team’s public-facing work. The Illustrator files in this page are the working exports behind a few of those pieces, not abstract mockups.
A small design system
The shirt designs had to carry a team identity, sponsor marks, event context, and readable text without turning into a wall of logos. I worked in Illustrator through several versions, keeping font and outlined-path variants when the artwork needed to travel between machines.
The 2024 Farmington Crew shirts are the clearest example of that process. The 2025 Duck Race designs show the same visual language adapted to a different event. Showing both sides matters: the front handles recognition, while the back has to hold the denser information.
Work beyond the artboard
The finished graphics were part of a larger communication job. I also helped produce Impact Video 2024 and Bash at the Beach 2023, including video editing and audio mixing.
The photos below show the work in use with the team. That is the part I care about most. A design is finished when people can wear it, read it, and recognize the group it belongs to.
What this work taught me
Design work for a robotics team is collaborative and constrained. There are opinions to collect, sponsor requirements to respect, deadlines tied to events, and physical printing limits that do not care how good a screen preview looks. I learned to treat the editable file, the final export, and the context around it as one piece of work.
